TyreSafe Announces First International Partnership with Uganda-Based NGO STASSU
July 15, 2025The Survivors Support Network
October 14, 2025Since 2013, Safe Transport and Survivors Support Uganda (STASSU) has led a transformative road safety initiative focused on reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities across Uganda. Through advocacy, community engagement, and strategic partnerships, STASSU has championed safer road environments—especially for vulnerable groups like school children, pedestrians, and boda boda riders. Key achievements include supporting the development of Uganda’s Safe School Zones Guide, promoting helmet and seatbelt use, conducting public awareness campaigns, and providing post-crash support services. STASSU’s work aligns with national and global road safety targets, contributing to Uganda’s efforts to reduce road traffic deaths by 25% by 2026 and 50% by 2030.
Completed Projects
- The Guide for Establishment of Safe School Zones in Uganda, developed by the Ministry of Works and Transport with support from STASSU, GHAI, and GRSP, provides a comprehensive framework to address the alarming rate of road traffic crashes involving school-aged children and young people. It outlines practical steps for planning, designing, and implementing Safe School Zones (SSZs) in alignment with national policies such as the Non-Motorised Transport Policy and the Traffic and Road Safety Act (1998) as amended. The guide details infrastructure standards, signage specifications, and smart traffic solutions, while emphasizing the importance of education, community engagement, and continuous safety assessments. It supports Uganda’s National Road Safety Action Plan goal of reducing road traffic deaths by 25% by 2026 and contributes to the global target of a 50% reduction by 2030.
- 6th UN Global Road Safety Week – Uganda Commemoration (2021) Co-organized the national celebration under the theme “Streets for Life #Love30”, emphasizing the importance of 30 km/h speed limits in urban areas and school zones.
